Gil Penalosa – Creating 8-80 Cities

Gil Penalosa is Executive Director of 8-80 Cities, a Canada-based non-profit organisation that aims to contribute to the creation of vibrant cities and healthy communities.

8-80 Cities promotes walking and bicycling as activities and urban parks, trails and other public spaces as great places for all. Penalosa believes that the mark of a healthy city is that it caters to both 8-year-olds and 80-year-olds – and everybody in between.

Penalosa was a keynote speaker at the 2010 International Healthy Parks Healthy People Congress in Melbourne, Australia, where he spoke about the transformation of the city of Bogotá, Colombia. During his time as the city’s Commissioner of Parks, Sport and Recreation, Penalosa’s team initiated the “new Ciclovia” – car-free Sundays – today an internationally recognised program that sees over 1.3 million people walk, run skate and bike along 75 miles of Bogotá’s city roads.
